Restaurant Review: Big Rock (Birmingham, Michigan)
After living in metro Detroit for 18+ years and enjoying some great restaurants during that time, it's pretty crazy that I'd never been to Big Rock until recently. And as someone who loves a good filet, it's even that much more strange. But alas, I finally got an opportunity to partake in one of metro Detroit's better restaurants and I was very happy with the experience & the food!
I had been talking about how I hadn't had a good filet in awhile and that prompted the decision to finally check out Big Rock with a friend. Right off the bat, we were welcomed by perhaps the best server I've ever had at a restaurant...Kevin. He was knowledgeable, friendly, funny and made our dining experience a lot of fun.
I got extremely lucky by selecting (according to Kevin) one of the best-valued wines they had on their menu...Mauritson Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel. I am a big fan of red Zin, so I had a price in mind ($45-50) and selected that one. And it truly was a great bottle of wine!
We started with their calamari with lemon-caper cream & tomatoes and it was fantastic. For an entree, my friend got their New York Strip special and I of course had a filet. Her steak was very tasty. My filet was cooked perfectly (bloody as hell, a.k.a. medium rare) and it was pretty awesome. I'd put it up there with the likes of Fleming's & Morton's but not quite as good as Ruth's Chris. But it was still fantastic! As a side dish, we had the Macaroni & Brie Cheese which I loved and had for lunch the next day.
Our dining experience at Big Rock was fantastic & I highly recommend going there (I know I will go back). If you go, ask to be seated in Kevin's section...you won't regret it!
