I saw "Star Trek: Into Darkness" at the IMAX in 3D in my backyard (the best place for blockbuster movies as the picture & sound are incredible) and I really enjoyed it. It continues the story from the 2009 J.J. Abrams reboot and builds upon it. And it is a nice companion to one of the original Star Trek movies.
The USS Enterprise is on yet another mission, this time to survey a planet in the Nibiru system. This planet is inhabited by very primitive beings and the Enterprise is not to reveal themselves to these beings. But in order to save Spock's (played by Zachary Quinto) life, Captain James T. Kirk (played by Chris Pine) does just that. And Kirk gets demoted in the process. Once this happens, all hell breaks loose & a new nemesis (played marvelously by Benedict Cumberbatch) takes shape, and Kirk is re-instated to hunt down this new villain. In the process of this hunt, the crew of the Enterprise is put in harm's way not only by this villain but also by an unlikely source. The manhunt and adventure get amplified & taken to a new level once this happens. An epic chess game ensues and the story & action take on a new level. And it's fantastic.
This 2nd "Star Trek" reboot is a great, tense adventure with a riveting & engaging story. The special effects & sound are always amplified when viewed in 3D at the IMAX and this is one of those movies that embraces that environment completely. The actors all turn in great performances, with Cumberbatch especially standing out in his role as "the villain." I also enjoyed the interaction with all of the characters on the Enterprise and the comedic moments were also delivered at the right time. And the Spock/Kirk relationship continues to grow...
I really enjoyed watching this movie. It was a lot of fun to watch and therefore I give it...7.5/10 stars
