Movie Review: "Prometheus" (2012)

I watched the movie "Prometheus" & thought that it was OK and entertaining. I didn't dislike it nor did I REALLY like it. And that's probably due to the fact that I am just not that much of a science fiction fan outside of movies like "Star Wars" or even the "Star Trek" reboot. I guess it's the science fiction "horror" genre that doesn't do it for me.

This movie is set in the year 2525 (Zager & Evan fans rejoice!)...oh wait, it's mostly set in the year 2093. Who says I can't have fun when reviewing a movie? Anyway...In the 2089, humans can fly great distances via spaceships but it takes 4 years to travel this far and you have to travel in a state of time suspension otherwise you'll die. In 2089, the Swedish version of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (the wonderful Noomi Rapace...actually playing a woman named Elizabeth Shaw) and her boyfriend/fellow archaeologist Charlie Holloway (played by Logan Marshall-Green) discover a star map in Scotland which they believe is evidence related to the beginning of human existence. They (along with a handful of others) travel to where they believe the star map is pointing. This journey takes 4 years and is monitored by a robot named David (played by Michael Fassbender) who loves T.E. Lawrence as portrayed by Peter O'Toole and even combs his hair & changes his voice to sound like Lawrence of Arabia. When they arrive at their destination, numerous bad things happen when they encounter the "residents" of this place. I won't spoil the movie here, so all I will say is that the ending is left somewhat open to interpretation.

As I said, I did like this movie. It was entertaining, acted fairly well (Rapace is excellent along with Charlize Theron as Meredith Vickers who is monitoring the expedition and John Luther/Stringer Bell himself Idris Elba who is the captain of the spaceship) and well made as the visual & sound effects were outstanding. As a fan of "Lawrence of Arabia", I was intrigued by David's impersonation of El Aurens.

I give this movie 6.5/10 stars
