I like Philip Seymour Hoffman and if it wasn't for him, I probably wouldn't have hated "The Master." But because of him, I didn't hate it even though I didn't really like it much either. Hoffman plays an L. Ron Hubbard type of character named Lancaster Dodd who founds a "religious" movement known as "The Cause." One of his followers is World War II veteran Freddie Quell (played by Joaquin Phoenix) who eventually travels with Dodd to spread his teachings (and act as enforcer). Phoenix's character has a lot of issues & proves to be quite unstable.
Hoffman is an excellent actor who performs every role with perfection and his performance here is no exception. And Phoenix does a good job playing the very complex, troubled, violent Quell. But this movie about what is essentially a cult and its leader is a little boring & doesn't really go any where and you don't really see the characters develop into anything other than what they are.
So I won't write much more here because I just didn't really like this movie very much...4.0/10 stars (and this is only because of Hoffman, otherwise I'd have probably given it a 2.0 or 3.0)
