Movie Review: "Jack Reacher" (2012)

I had very little expectations prior to watching "Jack Reacher" as I figured it was another stereotypical Tom Cruise action movie. But I was pleasantly surprised by this movie as turned out to be quite good and very well done.

Jack Reacher (played by Cruise and created by writer Lee Child) is a former Army M.P. He is a bit of a drifter and is very good at hiding in plain sight. A former Army sniper named James Barr (played by Joseph Sikora) who is accused of killing 5 random people near PNC Park in Pittsburgh writes "Get Jack Reacher" on a notepad while he is being interrogated by Detective Emerson (played by David Oyelowo) and District Attorney Alex Rodin (played by Richard Jenkins). After seeing Barr on TV, Reacher actually reaches out to the police himself without knowing that Barr asked for him. Barr claims to be innocent in this seemingly open & shit case. Reacher then begins working with Barr's sexy defense attorney Helen Rodin, the DA's daughter (played by Rosamund Pike) and they begin their own investigation into the shooting. This investigation takes on many twists & turns and the story becomes even more complex, leading them to a Serbian mobster played by Werner Herzog known as "The Zec" (which means "prisoner") and eventually taking Reacher into Ohio where he meets up with & gains the help of former Marine Gunnery Sergeant Cash (played perfectly by Robert Duvall).

"Jack Reacher" is a thrilling crime mystery that kept me very engaged throughout. The fact that the book version of Jack Reacher is approximately 6'5" and 250 lbs did not take away from Cruise's performance as this elusive, complex character (Cruise is about 5'7" and certainly NOT 250 lbs). Cruise gives a charismatic performance without being overly cocky or over the top. The rest of the actors turn in fine performances as well. This movie is well-scripted and the dialogue is smooth. The action is not overly exaggerated or excessively violent & is very realistic. This movie is much more complex & is deeper than I ever expected it to be.

I definitely liked this movie...7.0/10 stars
