Movie Review: "It's Kind of a Funny Story" (2010)

I recently watched "It's Kind of a Funny Story" and I really liked it. This is a funny, quirky, heart-warming, refreshing movie. It is mostly light-hearted but also has dramatic & romantic elements to it.

This movie starts with its main character 16-yr. old Craig Gilner (played excellently by Keir Gilchrist) contemplating suicide. He winds up in a hospital's psych ward and must stay for a minimum of one week. It's not a teen ward though, it's meant for adults. He runs into quite a cast of characters, most notably Noelle (played by Emma Roberts) and Bobby (played wonderfully by Zach Galifianakis). Craig forms very close bonds with both Noelle & Bobby and it's his relationship with Bobby that (I believe) defines this movie. Bobby helps Craig as much (if not more) than the doctors. And Galifianakis does a great job playing a mostly serious character, with just the right amount of humor thrown in.

I really liked this movie because it's not over the top and feels real. I like how Craig's character comes of age and how he finds his true self. This was one of those movies that just feels good to watch. And it was fun to watch! One of my favorite scenes involves the song "Under Pressure"...great scene!

Again, I really liked this movie...8.0/10 stars
