Movie Review: "Martha Marcy May Marlene" (2011)

I read about the movie "Martha Marcy May Marlene" in
Entertainment Weekly at some point in 2011 & they gave it a good rating. So I thought I'd add it to my Netflix list & check it out. I really hadn't heard anything about this movie outside of that magazine & many others may not know anything about it either.

This movie is a dark, slow-moving drama that has some disturbing moments. Elizabeth Olsen's performance as a delusional, paranoid young woman (she's Martha Marcy May Marlene) who is brain-washed by a cult is very powerful. I believe she will become one of the better young actresses similar to Jennifer Lawrence. You can see the pain, confusion and anguish in her face playing this tormented young woman.

And John Hawkes continues to deliver strong performances since his days as Sol Starr in "Deadwood." He plays the Charles Manson-ish cult leader Patrick. He portrays this man's evilness so calmly & mesmerizes the viewer almost as much as he does his followers.

I wasn't sure how much I liked this movie until the ending which is fitting for such an intense movie. It's not a great movie, but I did like it…6.5/10 stars
