2018 Oscar Predictions (UPDATE: Winners are highlighted in blue)

I've seen all of the Best Picture Nominees (Reviews & Ratings for the 2018 Best Picture Nominees) plus some of the others nominated for other awards (Molly's Game, The Big Sick, Roman J. Israel - Esq., The Florida Project, Mudbound, Baby Driver, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Beauty and the Beast, Victoria and Abdul, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2), so I am ready to make my predictions. Here they are, my 2018 Oscar predictions along with who I personally would pick to win if I was voting.

UPDATE: Winners are highlighted in blue. I was 7 for 8 with my predictions. I think I am going to add more categories next year. I also wish there would have been some upsets as the awards pretty much went as expected. I don't know how many of these movies will stand the test of time and I think The Shape of Water (the Best Picture winner and the only prediction I got wrong) will be forgotten as time goes on.

Best Picture

Call Me by Your Name
Darkest Hour
Dunkirk
Get Out
Lady Bird
Phantom Thread
The Post
The Shape of Water
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

It’s not an easy year to choose Best Picture. I don’t think my favorites (Lady Bird & Dunkirk) will win, but it’s one of those years that you never know and there could be an upset. I think that Molly's Game, Mudbound, or The Big Sick belong on this list instead of Phantom Thread (just read my review of this movie to see what I think about it). I think The Shape of Water could just as easily win as Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, but I also think something like Get Out could pull off an upset. It's going to be interesting to see how it all pans out!

PREDICTION: Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
MY CHOICE: Lady Bird (barely nudging Dunkirk)

Best Director

Dunkirk - Christopher Nolan
Get Out - Jordan Peele
Lady Bird - Greta Gerwig
Phantom Thread - Paul Thomas Anderson
The Shape of Water - Guillermo del Toro

Christopher Nolan is a brilliant director who deserves this award for previous movies (most notably The Dark Knight & Inception) as well as Dunkirk. I’d be THRILLED if he won, but I don’t think he will...

PREDICTION: Guillermo del Toro
MY CHOICE: Christopher Nolan

Best Actor

Timothée Chalamet - Call Me by Your Name
Daniel Day-Lewis - Phantom Thread
Daniel Kaluuya - Get Out
Gary Oldman - Darkest Hour
Denzel Washington - Roman J. Israel - Esq.

I think this one is pretty much a slam dunk even though I’d LOVE to see an upset and have Daniel Kaluuya win.

PREDICTION: Gary Oldman
MY CHOICE: Timothée Chalamet

Best Actress

Sally Hawkins - The Shape of Water
Frances McDormand - Three Billboards Outside Ebbing - Missouri
Margot Robbie – I, Tonya
Saoirse Ronan - Lady Bird
Meryl Streep - The Post

I think this is a slam dunk too, but I think Saoirse Ronan gave the best performance that I saw (I haven’t seen I, Tonya yet and I think Jessica Chastain got robbed for not being nominated for Molly’s Game).

PREDICTION: Frances McDormand
MY CHOICE: Saoirse Ronan

Best Supporting Actor

Willem Dafoe - The Florida Project
Woody Harrelson - Three Billboards Outside Ebbing - Missouri
Richard Jenkins - The Shape of Water
Christopher Plummer - All the Money in the World
Sam Rockwell - Three Billboards Outside Ebbing - Missouri

I loved Richard Jenkins in The Shape of Water, but I think Sam Rockwell will snag this one.

PREDICTION: Sam Rockwell
MY CHOICE: Richard Jenkins

Best Supporting Actress

Mary J. Blige - Mudbound
Allison Janney – I, Tonya
Lesley Manville - Phantom Thread
Laurie Metcalf - Lady Bird
Octavia Spencer - The Shape of Water

As I said above, I haven’t seen I, Tonya yet, but from what I’ve heard, Allison Janney is great in it (as she is in everything) and will probably win. I thought Laurie Metcalf was great in Lady Bird.

PREDICTION: Allison Janney
MY CHOICE: Laurie Metcalf

Best Adapted Screenplay

Call Me by Your Name - James Ivory
The Disaster Artist - Scott Neustadter & Michael H. Weber
Logan - Scott Frank & James Mangold and Michael Green
Molly’s Game - Aaron Sorkin
Mudbound - Virgil Williams and Dee Rees

I really enjoyed Molly’s Game and thought it was a great story. I don’t think it’s going to win though...

PREDICTION: Call Me by Your Name - James Ivory
MY CHOICE: Molly’s Game - Aaron Sorkin

Best Original Screenplay

The Big Sick - Emily V. Gordon & Kumail Nanjiani
Get Out - Jordan Peele
Lady Bird - Greta Gerwig
The Shape of Water - Guillermo del Toro - Vanessa Taylor
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing - Missouri - Martin McDonagh

This is a tough one for me because I absolutely LOVED The Big Sick and think it’s a shame that it didn’t get nominated for more Oscars. But Get Out is such a unique story (that I loved as well) that deserves to win. Can we have a tie for once? That’d suit me just fine!

PREDICTION: Get Out - Jordan Peele
MY CHOICE: The Big Sick - Emily V. Gordon & Kumail Nanjiani
