Movie Review: "Killing Them Softly" (2012)

"Killing Them Softly" (written & directed by Andrew Dominik) is a decent, entertaining movie starring Brad Pitt as a hitman. Do I need to say much more? OK, I guess I will...

Markie Trattman (played by Ray Liotta) likes to have his own poker games robbed in order to make some money. Another mobster named Johnny "Squirrel" Amato (played Vincent Curatola, aka Johnny Sack from "The Sopranos") decides to have Markie's next poker game robbed so Markie will get the blame. The guys he hires are pretty much morons (Frankie played Scoot McNairy & Russell played by Ben Mendelsohn) and this robbery winds up wreaking havoc on the local criminal economy. These dumb guys also wind up talking way too much, making them easy to track down. A Mafia emissary (Driver played by Richard Jenkins" hires Jackie Cogan (played by Pitt) to kill Markie. Jackie figures out what happened with the robbery, so he hires Mickey Fallon (played by the recently, sadly deceased James Gandolfini) to help him take out pretty much everyone. And that's about it.

This movie was OK and for the most part, it was entertaining. The interplay between Jackie & Driver is excellent and the scenes including Jackie & Mickey are good (mostly due to Gandolfini). But with the great cast, it should have been better as it didn't really go any where and was kind of boring at times.

This movie had a lot of potential and should have been much better...6.0/10 stars
