Movie Review: "Celeste and Jesse Forever" (2012)

"Celeste and Jesse Forever" is not the stereotypical romantic comedy and because of that, I thought it was a good, well done movie.

Celeste (played by Rashida Jones, who also co-wrote the script) & Jesse (Andy Samberg) are best friends and high school sweethearts who eventually get married. After a handful of years, their careers start to take different paths and they separate, but continue to be best friends. Sound like a recipe for disaster? Um...yeah. They have no boundaries and annoy their friends (most notably Beth played by Ari Graynor and Tucker played by Eric Christian Olsen). And Jesse is having a hard time with this as he still loves Celeste very much. They still maintain this friendship until Jesse actually becomes involved with another woman and Celeste has a hard time dealing with THIS. Celeste decides it's time for her to date. She also forms an unlikely friendship with a client whom she previously bashed (pop star Riley Banks played by Emma Roberts) and subsequently helps Riley out significantly not only with her career, but also in HER dating life. The movie has a nice ending which isn't as predictable as one would think...

Pretty much all of the performances in this movie are spot on. Rashida Jones continues to excel in pretty much everything she is in and Emma Roberts seems to surprise me every time I see her as she plays different characters in every movie she is in and does a great job doing so. She is not one to be typecast, that's for sure.

This movie seems more "real" than most rom-coms as the story is believable and ends the way most real life situations like this end...not like a fairy tale. This movie is funny, quirky, sweet, charming and was quite enjoyable to watch...7.0/10 stars
