Movie Review: "Arbitrage" (2012)

I watched "Arbitrage" and thought it was a decent movie with a great performance by Richard Gere. Had Gere not turned in such a performance, I probably wouldn't have liked this movie very much.

Gere plays Robert Miller who is a hedge fund manager. On the surface, Robert seems like a pretty good guy. But how could he be since this is a movie about a hedge fund manager who is filthy rich? Alas, Robert is not a very good man and this comes out very quickly & on many different levels. He is not exactly the perfect husband or father and he is a pretty shady businessman. He is quite morally bankrupt (but not necessarily emotionally exhausted for you "M*A*S*H" fans reading this). I won't say much more than this about the plot as I don't want to give the whole movie away.

This movie has thought-provoking & thrilling moments, but it's actually quite predictable. However, Richard Gere's performance makes this movie good. His portrayal of Miller is spot on. He plays this character with such ease, that you find yourself hoping that Gere is nothing like this man in real life. Miller is a complex man who is working many angles and Gere makes this look easy & does it with so much charm. It is one of his best performances.

I did like this movie, thanks to Richard Gere...6.5/10 stars
