Restaurant Review: Roast (Detroit, Michigan)

I have been wanting to go to Roast for a long time as some good friends told me about it & they loved it. And finally I had an opportunity to do so, on my birthday (12/28) no less! This was the final destination of a birthday adventure & it was most definitely the best location on that adventure!

Roast is a Michael Symon (if that means anything to you...) restaurant located in the Westin Book Cadillac Hotel in Detroit, Michigan. It has a very nice, modern layout & decor and a cozy atmosphere for a high-end restaurant. It is not stuffy at all and I didn't feel out of place dressed in jeans & a sweater.

What is the best thing about Roast? Of course...the food! It has a very unique menu but not outrageous. Prior to our appetizer, we were served bread from Zingerman's Deli in Ann Arbor, which was very tasty. For an appetizer, we chose the Mussels (coconut milk, chili, fried shallot, grilled bread) which were just fantastic and some of the best mussels I have ever had.

For an entree, my friend chose the Salmon (couscous, pomegranate, almond) and I chose the "Beast of the Day" which was suckling pig with salsa verde, roasted red peppers & jalapeños.

Our side dishes consisted of the Fried Brussels Sprouts (fried in duck fat!) & the Sweet Potato and Pecans.

Everything was so good & prepared to perfection! I've never been a big fan of pork-based dishes, but have been venturing out of my comfort zone in this area lately (see my review of Slow's & The Union Woodshop). And I was not disappointed with my choice at Roast! This was one of the best pork-based dishes I've ever tasted. The majority of the pork was similar to pulled pork without any sauce. But a portion was crispier, bacon-like which was by far my favorite! And the somewhat spicy sauce it was cooked in just added to the spectacular flavor. I don't think my arteries enjoyed it as much as my palette did though...

And the sides were amazing as well, especially the Brussels Sprouts! Who would have thought Brussels Sprouts could taste so good!? But I guess when they are cooked in duck fat, it's tough to go wrong...

Since it was my birthday, we just had to have dessert, so we got the Mexican Chocolate Truffle Cake (cinnamon milk chocolate ganache, vanilla cream) which capped off an amazing dinner.

If you are looking for a nice night out with good food, I highly recommend Roast. I know I will be going back as soon as I can!
